chain and tensioner

1.8 petrol what is a sign of the tensioner being at fault the one at the back with the multiplug, im mean do they rattle, or breakup and is that a pump on them with the multiplug on to lube it up with the oil, thx

I take it your on about the Camshaft Adjuster on rear of head. My old B5 ADR 1.8, on initial cold start up there was always a slight rattle for a second,but that was it. Never had a problem and is still fine now. Its controlled by ecu, but operates by oil pressure from engine.

They can be sensitive to old oil or new oil of too thick a grade and on the turbo they start to rattle when the oil pickup is becoming blocked.
