Hi all, I was wanting to replace the casing of my fob as the clip has broken. Since buying the passat the fob has been taped together. I've had enough of the tape sliding off and getting my hands sticky, so now I have bought an "as new" fob (complete with innards) off ebay to replace the old one.

Has anyone ever switched the casing for a new/er one?

I know that I will have to switch both the coded glass transponder and blade over to the new case, but are there any other things to watch out for? I dont want to **** up and having to have to fork out for an auto electrician to look at it. Thanks.

    Hi,

There is plenty of key bumph here, read it all and you become an expert!

    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...ad.php?t=10867

You have options to swap the innards over, or recode the new fob to your car.

I would suggest you get a new transponder (AKTP2 I think?) and Keyblade AKK68 from here

    http://www.hickleys.com/diagnostics/keys_menu.php

The new transponder can be coded to your immobiliser using Vagcom IF you know the Security Key Code, if not a specialist locksmith should be able to code it for you from your original key. a Vag Tacho lead and software can also reveal the code and recode the new transponder.
I believe Vag com can be used to recode the fob part to the car, but there is a fairly easy way that involves using one key in the doorlock and the new key in the ignition. To do this you need the second key blade cut as a minimum?

My key also broke at the top, on opening up the case I found that there is a small area at the 'root' of the original keyring attachment point, that is outside the seal. I chose to drill a small hole through the fob at this point and bent a piece of hard stainless wire into a triangle, it now fits a bit like a sink plug chain - no more sticky tape needed

The blade and transponder are housed in the lower half of the key, this can be removed from the fob and pushed into your new fob. As you look at the back of the key (the other side to the buttons) just above the VW badge is a split, use a blunt knife to open up this split, best to work from the sides. It is easy to program the new fob (if it is compatible! check the last 2 letters and the frequency on the fob) see the handbook for the car.
