By chance, has anyone here attempted DIY repairs on peeling/damage to your Passat's alloy wheels?

I have a few unslightly scrapes that have damaged the coating (and therefore are peeling), plus one that is starting to cause a 'spidering' effect, working its way under the laquer.

I've researched and noted the Wurth German Alloy Respray/Lacquer sprays, which apparently match quite well the colour of VW alloys, and intend to sand-down, fill and respray these (small) areas on my wheels.

I'm not likely to be doing anything until the weather warms up (for better spraying/drying time), but feel that this is a better option rather than let them get any worse, and therefore have to get new alloys instead...

I've done this quite a few times with good results.

In fact my latest go was only last week!

    Not on a VW but....

Quite easy to with the tyres off and quite do-able with them on only that you obviously have to mask off.

As an alternative to the Wurth paint, Fords Moondust silver is a good cheaper match.

The trick as with any cellulose spraying to getting a goof finish is in the polishing up afterwards. If you need any tips, then just ask.

looks like a great job done there..

although i won't have the luxury of being able to remove the tyres, I will be able to mask off the areas that need work doing. The only slight difference may be in the final look - on close inspection, the finish of the alloys on mine are like machined steel, very similar to a vinyl record. Obviously with the silver paint it will be more of a metallic finish - however as long as the colours are similar, no-one's going to get that close to inspect them...

You will need to re-finish the whole of the face of the wheel to make it look right.

Masking off the tyre isn't so bad just takes a little time. Also mask off the rear of the wheel as well if your not re-finishing both sides as the overspray will look messy and is a right sod to remove.

I've used the wurth stuff before on BMW alloys and it's a good match and good quality paint.

It's all about the prep with this kind of job

This finish is often referred to as 'diamond' cut finish. In reality it can be a pretty rough finish, although looks good if machined correctly. Attached is a picture of one I did recently from a Mercedes AMG.

OK, so I don't want to respray the whole wheel (or all 4 if the diamond cut finish looks different on the other 3 wheels), so is there any touch-up paint that closely matches our alloys? Just thinking that I may just cover the chips with a close matching colour that looks OK from a distance - I'm talking an area of around 3-4mm2, so any close matching silver would do...

    thanks.
