I bought a secondhand Westfalia towbar removed from a 02 Passat Estate and tried to fit it to my 04 passat estate at the weekend.

The problem was that the pre-drilled holes in the car to fit the towbar (4 off, 2 each side) are 10mm diameter, but the holes in the towbar are nearly 20mm diameter.

Am I missing some bushes that take up the difference in the diameters?

The passat changed in 2004/2005 have you got the newer model or the older model?

I ask because your bar will not fit if your vehicle is the new shape and it came off a 02 model.

No, I have the older model passat so it's the same car and should fit.

I've downloaded the fitting instructions from Westfalia but it just shows 10mm bolts, but the holes in my towbar are approx 19mm.

Is it a westfalia detachable towbar?

if so there are two bars available

321505 - This one not being the 4 motion Passat
321508 - This IS the 4 motion model.

if the person who you purchased your bar off had the 4 motion model and you don't it will not fit and vice versa.

    Hi Creedxup,

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

321504 - I have never heard of this part number before, I suspect it is an OEM part number. Dealers and aftermarket retailers get different part numbers...I have spoken with westfalia UK and they can't specify which on it is for I could Contact Germany for you but it might be easier for you you to contact a VW dealership local to you and ask them.

Alternatively PFJones will be able to supply you with a OEM bar for your passat with free single electrics. You can go to Volkswagon passat detachable Towbars.

Many thanks for your replies, I've downloaded the fitting instructions for my car and it looks like the Westphalia order number is

    321 505

    but the model number is

    321 504

    http://www.westfalia-automotive.de/f...%20war-101.pdf

So I have the right towbar for my car but surely if the holes in the towbar are twice as big as the holes in the car it's never going to be secure??

Many thanks to all who helped, I fitted the towbar yesterday, it would appear that when you torque the bolts they crimp the chassis into the bosses welded onto the bar,

I's all nice and secure so all good.
