    Hi

I am new to this forum and hope i can get the help i desperately need.

To get straight to the point, my golf first of all has been serviced 3 weeks ago, new air, oil, fuel, pollen filter, replaced oil.

The car seems to lose power uphill at about 60mph, and goes very sluggish and i cant put foot down to accelerate it as seems it wont pick speed up.
I am getting very confusing messages with people saying its a Vacumn leak (whatever that is), or boost leak, or even my turbo on its way out!

I have read on this forum a lot of people talking about MAF , and using VAG to read codes.

So far i have connected a obd2 scanner and its not picked up any fault codes, and a local mechanic tells me my turbo will need replacing but he seems a little unsure, and i dont want to be paying for something i may not need. Im hoping for it to be something easy to sort out.

My car does make a whistling sound ( bit like a police siren in the distance)
Again some poeple tell me this is absolute normal and nothing to worry about, and some say turbo prob. Can someone please clarify which it is ?

Local driving seems fine as pretty much straight roads, but motorway and duel carriageways, it loses power.

Can you also point me to where the vacumn pipe is ( pic preferred ), and should i try to use the turbo fluid someone mentioned in another thread to clean out carbon deposits.

Sorry dont know nothing about my golf , so detailed info appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't go changing the turbo just yet. If the turbo vanes were clogged with carbon deposits, then you'd be getting overboot and subsequently the car would go into limp mode (reset when turning ignition off, then on again). You'd also get a code 17965 logged. Pressure variation when you have a leak in your turbo pipes would give you 17964.

A faulty MAF, or more correctly AMM (Air Mass Meter), more often than not will not give generate any fault codes. Personally, I'd be looking at replacing the AMM, but first check turbo pipes and their connections. Haven't got a pic, but first find the intercooler. It's located behind the O/S/F bumper. You can then trace back and check pipes etc for loose connections or split hoses.

If you replace the AMM, only buy a genuine unit from VW. Don't be tempted by fleaBay rubbish or other 3rd party copies.

If you want to do work on your car, invest in a Haynes manual. At least then you'll be able to find your way around it.

I agree with herby0001's points. Boost leak from intercooler on my car sounded like a compressed air line being released - hissing sound.

I had a faulty air mass meter (AMM) on my first Golf - it was ok at part throttle but when the accelerator was pressed slowly at approx. 30mph there was a point where no more power came. It was as though the second half of the pedal movement did nothing. There was no hissing sound as above.

Easy to change, recommend you read Haynes first or study posts on this forum. If you decide to get one, go to a VW dealer and give your reg. number to get the correct part in case the one that's on is not right. Tools required are pliers for the hose clip and cross point screwdriver. Make sure the air filter box is cold before starting - it's easy to round off the captive nuts in the plastic if it's warm and soft. Much easier to do if the box is taken out of the car first but it is possible if not.

Top pic shows air filter box with AMM in LH side, hose coming away from it to left. Bottom pic shows AMM, electrical connector to top, hose clip to left and crosspoint mounting screw (1 of 2)

Thanks guys, i have it booked in to a well recommended specialist on VW apparently and he will diagnose it on Wednesday and let me know for certain what it is. I did tell him i have used an obd2 scanner and it does not pick up any error codes. He just laughed, basically saying the machine they use is over £1000 worth and not a £25 cheapo scanner from ebay, and theirs will show live running data whatever that is. Anyway, i have booked it in and will let you know the outcome on Wednesday.

Any ideas how much it should be to do a diagnostic check btw, forgot to ask him ?

I think £35 is around the going rate for an independent.

Thanks herby0001, taking it over to him now so will let you know what he says once hes done. Btw, i cant seem to find the log out button on this forum, so i end up closing down by pressing the X in the top right corner. Is there no "log out " option on this forum.

Looked but cant see it anywhere obvious.

I had this problem with my 115tdi when i had it. At one point the MAF did need replacing, then after a few months, the turbo kept loosing power, like i would be driving on the motorway and then it would drop into limp mode. After running a few diagnostic checks, someone recommended i go get the actuator greased up. All i know i went to a garage, put the car on a ramp and i was inside, and he would just tell me to rev the engine at random points whilst he sprayed WD-40 onto some actuator rod or something? dont know exactly what it was, but it did the job, car felt alot quicker and didn't get the limp mode problem again for at least 6/7 months until when i sold the car, and the best thing is it only cost £15!

Maybe you could try the same?

Ok, garage tells me my turbo problem

He says it is overboosting and as a result of that it cuts off the turbo, and it needs replacing or better still if i can get it reconditioned. Does anyone know where i can get a cheap second hand trubo or one where i can get it reconditioned around the west yorkshire area, preferably near bradford, huddesrfiled, halifax areas.

He tells me, the car will carry on like this without any further problems and wont screw anything else up if i did not replace/repair it. Is this right ? Cos local driving its fine, plenty power, but high speed cuts off.

As for the actuator rod, please can you tell me or point towards where it is (image preferred), so i can try the wd40 on it.

Also tells me it will be £120 labour to fit turbo in - does the price seem right ?

Thanks, now to go look for a turbo...dammn

Ok another update, i unplugged the MAF connector and tried to drive car, and there was no power , and when i reconnected it, the power was back. Does this then elimnate a fault in the MAF meter.

I also sprayed some WD40 on the VNT i think, (the small press in thing behind the engine with a rubber seal on bottom ) as recommended on another forum. Still no difference. I will now add some inotec turbo booster tomorow as a last resort, and then look to reconditon the TURBO.

Even though i have already been told its the turbo, i thought i would eliminate other possibilities for my own peace of mind.

Any other sugeestions guyz, and one more question - Is the Air Mass Meter and the Mass Air Flow the same thing, or is it two different parts ? If so, where is the AMM ?

    Look forward to replies.
