This is probably a stupid question but...

I recently bought a VW Polo 1.6 TDI 75ps. I would have gone for the 90ps but the 75ps was the only one available at short notice.

What I’m curious to know is; what’s the difference between the 75ps engine and the 90ps engine? (Apart from the obvious 15ps and 26lbs/ft)

One has a Max output 75ps (55kW) Max torque 144lbs/ft (195Nm) and the other has Max output 90ps (66kW) Max torque 170lbs/ft (230Nm)
The fuel consumption figures quoted by VW are identical for both engines at 65.7mpg combined.

1.Has the higher output engine got a bigger turbo, air intake, injectors etc. or has the ECU been mapped differently?

2.How can both engines return the same fuel consumption figures?

3.What tuning options, if any, are available for the 1.6 TDI?

    Many thanks
    Jon.

From the limited info I have on the 6R Polo and from a quick study of the engine parts I cannot find one single part that is different between the three1.6 CR TDI engines apart from the ECU and the CAYA (75PS) having a different rear silencer to the CAYB (90PS) and CAYC (105PS). It would seem from that there may be the possibility to have the 75PS remapped to the 110 ish area.

    Thanks Crasher for the reply.

That sounds like a nice little earner for VW! Tinker with some software to add a few more lb/ft and charge several hundred extra squid for the privilege!
Do you know of anyone who’s remapped this engine? This is probably a very simplistic view but wouldn’t it just be a case of taking the mapping from the 110 ECU and applying it to the 75 ECU?

I don’t know of anyone who does them yet but it won’t be long.

    Hi Crasher.

I’ve come across a couple of plug-in boxes on t’internet for the 1.6 TDI.

    Tdi-Tuning
    http://www.tdi-tuning.co.uk/volkswag..._bhp_P997.html

    And

    Chip Express
    http://www.chipexpress.com/diesel-tu...-kit-2176.html

There’s a big difference in price and output.
    From 75ps/230Nm to 94ps/244Nm (Ł129.99) and 95ps/272Nm (Ł495.00) respectively.

I’m assuming the cheaper system from tdi-Tuning is analogue. The Chip Express site sounds far more professional and convincing.

Would you recommend either of these systems?

    Many thanks
    Jon.

I would only use Steinbauer myself and the system for yours is in preparation. I do personally prefer plug in tuning boxes, they are very easy to reverse if the need arises, of course companies who do mapping will strongly disagree with me but I offer both and plug in is what I prefer.

    Cheers Crasher.

I'll keep an eye out for the Steinbauer module.
Their UK HQ is only 45 minutes up the road from me too!

    Thanks again.
    Jon.
