exhaust emissions warning light

Hi, i've just recently bought a 2001 Bora and the exhaust emissions warning light has just come one, some times it flashes, other times its steady on all the time. it has gone off completely for a short amount of time and then it suddenly comes on again? the car is running smoothly and i can see or hear anything out of the ordinary. any ideas?

The first thing you need to do is have the car read for fault codes, there are literally dozens of reasons the emissions light could come on for but I suspect it will be the coolant temperature sender which is simple and cheap to replace.
