I have an issue regarding the ESP. Mine is a MKV GT FSI 2.0 150PS, 55 Reg, 48k. The ESP fault light lit up the other day when it was raining very heavily.

I know that it is a common fault with many VAG models, but could the fault be caused by something as trivial as damp weather?
In addition, I have booked a diagnostics check with Wayside VW for them to clarify, I hear if a part needs replacing, it is expensive?

Any advise on if VW UK will contribute to the cost of a replacement part as it is a common fault? Also, ESP does not require any maintenance, surely it should last the lifetime of the vehicle???

as above, wait for the scan results as it could be something as small as a sensor needing replaced.

in my case of an ESP light being on constantly, the car eventually wouldn't start and it turned out to be a faulty engine ECU. it cost ~£900 and VW offered me no contribution.

for others it has been the ABS ECU which costs ~£1200+ and some have had hefty contributions from VW.

i read about another fella who had vermin chew through ones of his cables, but seeing as you can move the car i think it's safe to rule that one out!

let us know how it goes.

I had the same bother with a 2005 Toledo. After heavy rain next day light on and also Traction Control light and went into limp mode. After much faffing around I got an electronics guru to look at it and it was a bad earth under the battery which has several earth wires on it, including main ECU. Cleaned earth and no further problems. Good luck.

You obviously need to get the fault checked out first before spending cash but a faulty ABS module doesn't necessarily mean £1000 bills,

Although still not exactly cheap this company will recondition your existing one at a fraction of the VW price.

I've not used them so can't say how good they are but have read in other forums of good service.

Hopefully it's not that serious but if it is this is another option.

Also remembered that my old A3 TDI did something similar, I went over a ramp in roadworks and the ESP light came up and wouldn't go off, it turned out to be a broken wire and was fixed under waranty.
