I have an 06 A4 convertible. With the roof up there is an adjustable 'Roof Storage Compartment' in the boot that must be lowered using a lever for the roof to be able to open.

For some reason, the lever that lifts and lowers the compartment no longer works.

Can somebody give me some tips on how to investigate what could be causing this?

I've not had the car long and having learnt from past experiences i'm going to ask for help BEFORE attempting to solve any problems alone!!

    Thanks!

THe only time I have had this issue is when I have too much in the boot and the shelf has got stuck on the stuff in there... as far as i know its just a mechanical lever... so should be fairly simple to cure....

I have just spent a day investigating this problem and it is caused by the shelf being pushed up by things in the boot, the bowden cables come of their pulleys meaning that you have to take the entire variable box out which is quite a time consuming job because you have to remove the boot liners both sides, the shelf flap and the operation handle, then unclip the cables from behind the lever so that they are both laying in the boot, then close the boot and set the roof so you can get access to the top of the roof compartment, remove the 4 screws by pulling back the thick carpet either side of the box, now close the roof again and open the boot, disconnect the micro switch on the bottom right panel of the box and push a screw driver into the plastic casing where the connector was to lever up the box which is now stuck down with double sided tape on both left and right panels. close the boot again and open the roof to gain access, the box will now lift out, 2 people need to hold it each side of the vehicle by the screw holes so that it doesn't open, then lift it clear. you will now be able to dismantle the sides and refit the cables around the pulleys.
NOTE: If the bowden cables are sliding in too far because the plastic end stops have broken the box will open unevenly. to cure this problem fit a V clip around the inner of the cable in the small hole where the cable enters. (you can find a V clip on the operation handle panel) this will save spending a fortune on a new box!! Now just put it all back together, Simples!
