It couldn't come at a worse time, thanks to the terrible economic situation, but my car won't start.

    It is a late 2001 (2002 model) 2.5 TDI V6 AKN automatic.
    160,000 miles
    WVWZZZ3BZ2E147xxx

It started for 2 seconds and died.
It would not restart or even offer to fire.
I turned it over on the starter between rests until the battery started to sound flat
    No codes are stored.
I took of a metal injector pipe and nothing came out, it usually spits out in pulses during cranking.
I tried the other key in case the immobiliser chip is dud.
I took the rubber pipes off the fuel filter and no fuel comes out when I turn the ignition on or crank.

    My questions are:
    1. Any tips?

    2. What is in the tank, I have scoured the internet and found all sorts of conflicting info. e.g.
    A conventional electric lift pump.
A mechanical lift pump driven by an impeller and flow of returning fuel.
    There is no lift pump.
There is a pump to move fuel around the odd shaped tank (on 4x4).

    3. If there is one, would a dud lift pump cause no starting, or just hesitation and poor response?

I suspect the main injection pump is duff but would like to rule everything else out first.

Thank you for your cooperation during these difficult times

Mmmm I had an identical issue with a Rover 220 turbo. It was an immobiliser fault. Not sure re the immobilisers on your car though..?

You have a pre-supply pump in the fuel tank, you should hear it when you turn the ignition on and off and you can start by checking fuse 28 20amp the engine will not run with a defect pump, and it will not show up as a fault code

Thanks for the information, what an expensive little pump. I will let you know what happens when it arrives.
