    Hi

Although the vast majority of you on these forums have TDI's, can anyone recommend good oil (castrol?) for the 2.0 FSI petrol engine (non-turbo)? I checked the oil level earlier today and it's just above min, even though I had it serviced last September. Not sure why it is so low- no oil leaks and not smoky...

If I have to I'll go to the dealers but I would prefer to go to the local garage to get some - what spec am I looking for, or will my handbook give me the correct specification?

    Thanks for your help.

    Paul.

Up to 1 litre per 1K miles is acceptable, how many litres over how many miles you will be able to tell after topping up. The oil to use depends on the schedule it is on, annual or variable. For annual I would use Quantum Platinum 5w/40 and for variable, Quantum Longlife 3 5w/30.

Expect 3853 further posts about this, no other subject generates more posts or opinions, except possibly tyres.

thanks for that, i've covered the best part of 5,000 miles since the service, but i'm not sure how much oil the independent garage will have put in, plus i'm not used to checking oil levels at all - it was purely a one-off check after a car clean today. As I said though, no leaks, so maybe its been a bit thirsty over this cold winter we've had...

According to VW, 1 litre per 1000kms (600 miles) is acceptable

in that case, 750ml for 5000 miles sounds OK - however it would make it the most oil-thirsty car i've ever had. having said that it's also the largest and most powerful too, so i've got nothing to compare it to.

Filled up with Mobil 1, 504.00 spec, which brought the level right back to full. Feeling happier now. Thanks.

750 ml/5k miles is better than a lot of diesel owners have mentioned on here, but is about what I get.

VW's minimum acceptable equates to 350 miles per pint - as bad as a two-stroke, and seems to fly in the face of all the environmental rubbish that they put in the driver's manual.
