I have started looking for an Audi A3 to replace my 2007 Renault Megane R26. First reason, I need to get a more "grown up" looking car and second reason is i need a car that will actually get somewhere in the snow and not dance about in the same place sliding all over the place. (I live in north east Scotland. I need one that still got good power as my car at moment has 230 bhp and dont want to go back down to something little like 100bhp, so that why im looking at the 2.0.

What are peoples opinion on these 2 cars? Is it worthwhile getting the diesel chipped for more power? Are both of them decent in the snow?

This is my first post so be gentle

PS Also do i go for the sport or the s-line, was told s-line is nicer.

Fuel consumption will be a big thing to consider.

I wouldnt expect either of them to brilliant in the snow, the 4WD drive system is the Haldex version, not the Quattro version found in bigger Audi's - it's ok but not brilliant.

You need to test drive one this week in the snow and see how you go!

Sport or S-line is down to your budget and what you want in the car. Testing them yourself is the only way really.

I have a 2.0Tfsi Quattro 2007 and it has been brilliant in the snow. Not once have I had to turn back or surrender to the elements. I personally chose the petrol over diesel for the additional power/torque and noise. I am sadly having to sell it for an avant as I have just inherited 2 big dogs. If you are interested, it is the exclusive S Line edition, with full red/black leather, Nav Plus. Auto light/rain sensors,Bose sounds, Bluetooth telephone prep. Parking beepers, MFSW. 36K MILES FASH NEW MICHELINS BEAUTIFUL PEARLECENT BLACK.
Personal message me if you are interested.

Would have to agree Haldex is not the best in Snow. I have had 7 Audi A3's with Haldex and I would say that my present S3 has been working fine. But I think I have just been lucky

If you can I would go for the 2.0T quattro but if the mileage is high 20K+ per annum the Diesel is a must

Sport is nice just Sline is better its your budget if you can I would

I have 2.0TFSI Quatro. Haldex has been seamless in the snow, absolutely brilliant, so I dont understand the negative comments.

One day i drove mine out of the road over snow without any fuss at all only to spend the next hour digging and shovelling snow as my wifes golf would barely move.

I wouldnt have believed the difference. Just need to remember that it doesnt stop any better.

MPG is currently around 30MPG on a 10 mile run.

I have recently bought a 170 Quattro and cannot comment on how it performs in the snow but I can confirm it doesn't work very well on ICE.

After only owning the car for 2 weeks it has spent the last 3 weeks in the repair shop having the rear suspension rebuilt.

Back end seemed to kick out when going round icy corner and rear wheel hit the curb side on. Was only doing about 20mph. After that the car wouldn't drive in a straight line. So a call to insurance was in order. Only got the car back yesterday.

Other than that I love it. Plenty of power, good solid built car.

I went for the S-Line as I feel it looks better and I wanted sportier look with leather seats. But its all about personal taste and budget. S-Line sometimes gets slated for its firm ride but I like it

Not as economical as I thought it would be but I am getting 40mpg. So can't complain for power on tap.

    .
I have had the back end kick out a number of times when pulling out of junctions etc in icy conditions when the drive gets shunted to the back wheels. To be expected really.

I kind of find it reassuring to be reminded that the system is working as it should, but can see how it would catch you out if you didnt expect it.
