Forum is all new to me so forgive me if this is too long winded but I think it will be of interest.
I purchased my Golf PLus 1.9TDI from Arnold Clark in Stirling last November with 14000 miles on the clock and thought it was a 1.9TDI 90BHP model as advised by the dealer. This was fine by me as I wanted an economical car with good fuel consumption. I insured it with the RAC after consulting confused . com for advice. they confirmed that my car was a 90BHP model ( as listed on their computer). Fine so far till I read my car manual and found a label in the service book that says that in fact I have a 77KW TDI or 105BHP. I phoned the local VW dealer to check and they confirmed that I do have a 105BHP engine. I have had to tell my insurance company and pay an increased premium. Not really a problem but how many other owners are running about with, as they think a 90BHP engine and in fact they have a 105? This would invalidate their policy in the event of a claim would it not? any comments?

The car is great by the way and is going for its first service next week, at 17600 miles and a year and three months old. Just hope it is not too expensive.

Thanks all, happier now. My fuel consumption works out at 41.94 on average and the best I ever got was 46.18 on holiday last month in the lake district. is this the best I can expect from a 1.9 tdi?, a bit disapointed if I am honest.

erm.... i assume the 42mpg is around town? the 46 mpg sounds low, but it depends how you drive it. to get anything near to 50mpg,you need to keep as close to 65/70 as possible really, conserve the gas when you're going downhill, try to see further in front to slow your engine rather than braking and gassing all the time, that helps too.

i find if you sit behind a caravan driver for a good hour, your MPG shoots up LOL

laughing aside, i get around 35mpg around town in mine and around 50mpg on the m.way.

although yours is a mk5, so it should be slightly better?

how many miles was the trip you managed to average 46mpg?

42mpg is average over 3000 miles since nov06 when I bought the car. I do a lot of very short journeys with a cold engine as my wife is waiting for a new knee so perhaps low average mostly due to that. the 46 mpg was a mixture of two 4 hour motorway runs at on or about 80mph and relaxed local runs on holiday at up to 55 or so. I find though that I have to change down into 4th much under 50mph and in a lot of urban situations I am never in 5th at all.

I had a 306turbo diesel for years and it gave similar performance with much better fuel consumption but was lower geared.

never mind I still have a smile on my face when I drive my car. Much as I had in 1967 with my first beetle
