Hi, I have a 2004 1.9 Transporter and the glow plug warning light started flashing yesterday.

At the same time, the brake lights and one of the rear lights stopped working. I tried replacing one of the brake light bulbs and it didn't work...?

Can anyone give me any pointers as to what the problem might be?

    Thanks in advance

it needs a brake switch on the brake pedal,
    very common,around £10-£12,easy to change,if you're careful,

Just replaced it on my Audi A6.

I recommend you go to the dealer to buy it, from the dealer the part (for an A6) cost me £8.50 whereas most motor factors seem to want about £12 as Stewy said.

    It's a fiddly job.

See post #16 in this thread for how to change it in an A6. Apart from the plastics around it, replacing the switch should be exactly the same.

Tip: DON'T apply the brake while changing it (contrary to other forum posts), as this won't correctly set the plunger length of the switch and you'll end up with more fault codes than before.

Thanks so much for replying Stewy and Paul that's really helpful.

I'll get a switch and try to fit it this week.

What a great site by the way - I used to spend ages trying to find out how to fix my van, and then you guys reply so quickly after me posting my question - brilliant!

Thanks again - i'll let you know how it goes

    No brake lights!!
Can you please help, all my brake lights stopped working about 6 months ago on 2.5TDI 57 plate transporter, the coil light also was flashing so changed the brake switch and all was well. But yesterday My brake lights failed again and the coil light started flashing, so I replaced the brake switch again but this time it has not worked.

I checked the fuses but they are fine, can anyone please help with a possible cause and solution?
    Thanks
    Stu.

Do you think all the bulbs would fail at once? and would that make the coil light flash?

could you have had a bulb out for a while and not noticed, do you check them often. and yes, if the bulbs are blown then the coil light will flash.
