After about 1 month's use I noticed that the radiator fan on my new (August 09) A6 saloon was on whenever the engine was running, irrespective of engine or air temperature. It cuts in about a minute after start-up. I tried switching the aircon off but that made no difference.
I assumed there was a fault with the coolant thermostat and sent the car in for repair. I've just got it back from the dealer (Tonbridge Audi) who tell me there is nothing wrong and the fan is meant to run all the time. Can this be true? And what's the point? Continuous running is wasteful (of fuel and fan life), annoying (it's noisy) and serves no obvious purpose. When I asked the reason I was just told "It's German and very clever" (!)

This is my first Audi and I have not come across this 'feature' in any other car with or without aircon. Grateful for any advice. Does the fan run all the time on your A6?

    Hi,

I don't think mine does this. I have noticed the fan running for a minute or so after switching off on a couple of occasions over the summer, but certainly not on every journey.

It may be a faulty fan controller, but to be honest it would require diagnosing by a dealer to get it replaced under warranty. Is there another dealer you could take the car to for a second opinion?

MFGF - Many thanks. I think you're right and will try another dealer. I've also written to Audi UK and it will be interesting to see if I get a reply.

Pretty sure that when I took my 2.7tdi A6 in this year that there is a recall for this fault. Enquire abut this at your dealer.

I have had this happen on my A6 Avant (June 09) - several times the fan has kept running for far too long - I stopped it by starting the engine again and then turning the engine off and that stopped the fan! Almost the equivalent of Ctrl Alt Delete on your PC

Just had a couple of things done at the dealer to may A6 3.0tdi, and they rang to tell me that this was a recall and did it FOC while it was there. it is a known problem and could flatten the battery.
