How do you determine whether your engine is on a fixed or longlife schedule, what's the difference?

How often is it serviced? fixed service is every 10,000 miles or once a year regardless, longlife can take up to 18 odd months and 20,000 miles.

    Cheers

Only by interrogating the instrument panel using a diagnostic computer can you tell for sure which schedule it is on. Whatever it is on, I strongly advise you to go to annual servicing but stick with the Longlife III spec oil if you wish.

    Hi,

Just had the car serviced on the fixed term scheme from the ********. Not sure what oil was used. Dosen't say on the invoice, just something about 'LAVS'?! What's that?

    Thanks.

Not sure what LAVS means, could it possibly be the cost of disposing of the old oil in an environmentally friendly way?

    Final question, I think...

With the fixed oil change regime, I assume a service indicator light comes on after 10k/one year, or is this only applicable with the LongLife variable regime?

I guess you can reset this manually.

Also, is another way of telling whether your car is on a fixed or longlife regime by checking the countdown to next service indicator. If it reads over 10k, can you assume it's on longlife?

Yes, fixed schedules will have a 10k and count down towards service (on some anyway). Not sure about the variable ones, no one here has one of them

Turns out LAVS is Audi's longlife oil AVS! i.e. must be 5W-30.

Someone here (can't find post), put a litre of 5W-40 instead of 5W-30 to top-up. I don't think it shoud be too much of a problem on the 10K/1year fixed term service as they get an oil change then.

What's the difference between 5W-30 and 5W-40? Thinner? Thicker?

How many litres does the oil tank hold? 3 litres?
