    Quick question,
Is it possible to completely shut off the EGR valve??
I have a jerky juddery issue on idle and between 1500-2000 revs when driving. Mechanic suggested EGR control valve but replaced it with no change. A replacement EGR seems only option. Unless it can be shut off??

Hello, you should be able to pull the vacuum pipe off the EGR valve with the engine at idle and make sure there is vacuum on the end of the pipe with your finger, then push it back on and pull off again, this time, listen for the valve snapping shut inside it should make a metallic ting sound. This shows it is closing and not stuck. So you can now put a bolt or bit of pencil etc.. in the end of this pipe and cable tie it to stop it moving around, and run your tests. This will disable the EGR and leave it closed. You may get a MAF sensor code set though, as the ECU looks for a corresponding dip in MAF reading when the EGR is opened (which allows unmetered gas into the intake) in fact the ECU uses this drop in MAF reading as feedback on how it's doing with EGR regulation.

Turned out I had purchased a crap MAF which was a patent part. I replaced it with an original VW part and it cured the jerkiness!
Worth thinking about if you have replaced the MAF recently.

My mechanic says that you can only shut off the EGR via computer.
