recently bought a4 2.0 tdi sline 140 and still under warranty. Started getting a rattling sound from engine when idle. At first thought it was coming from the alternator, however if I place myself in front of the grill, the rattling seems to be louder the lower i go. I've no warning lights and car still responds with no problems. Is the water pump situated just below the alternator? and could it be on its way out?

    PLEASE HELP!

Get it to the dealers if still in warranty, could be an Air.Con.Compressor fault...or a number of other things.Let them do the looking.Let us know the verdict.

Possibly the alternator one way clutch making the tensioner rattle. Does it get worse if you lock the steering over?

Are you not an Audi Tech? You're right! after you mentioning the possible cause I tested the Air con comp, If I switch in the 'ECO' button the comp is starting to rattle, however switch off the 'ECO' and the noise doesn't exist. Tried this throughout the day and the results are the same. A top diagnosis, many thanks!

I have exactly same prob on 55 plate A4 with only 60k miles - minor internal part but whole unit has to be replaced - Ł850 quoted by franchaised dealer - obviously a common fault so if you are still in warranty get it sorted - I expected more from customer care but . . . .
