    Hi all
    (need some help)
    i have just bought a 2000 w plate vw golf v5 107k miles.
ive had it into my local vw dealer for service and a couple of repairs (spending loads to get it back to its best)
The garage said i dont have to replace the timing chain ever but still not sure as ive been reading mixed reports online. some saying change it at 100k.
it has a full vw service history and 107k on the clock. do i have to change it and if so where can i get it done as vw edinurgh gorgie rd wont do it
hope to hear from you all
    Mike Bianco

Hi there, a chain doesnt get changed, unlike belts which get old, perish and crack with age, a chain doesnt need to be changed

Yes but a chain does stretch if wrong grade of oil is used, will allow poor running of the engine and will also break but will make a great deal of fuss about-it just like us here ! Also the tensioner and chain guides are wearing items and while a belt is cheap and easy to replace, a chain is big money to change and most mechanics only fish the new chain while leaving the tensioner and guides in !

that is not ture, chains do need to be placed, but only do it when they get noisey, other wise you are throwing a lot of money at it for no good reason, my friend just had the chain and cam belt changed on his 1.8t passat, cause it was making a noise and the tentioner was losing pressure. that was really expensive.
