The ABS light on my 'x' plate polo gti comes on most of the time. First thing in the morning it may be ok but then it comes on after 3-4 miles. Later in the day it will go out when you start the car but will come on after going 100 yards down the road.
I had the front & rear pads changed & this started about a week later & there may be a bit of air in the system. Would the air make a difference?
I have cleaned the abs sensors on the front wheels, but no luck. My mate from the AA hooked his laptop up to it & it says its a ABS pump fault? He reset it but it came straight back once I test drove the car.
Do I have an expensive repair on me hands....

    Any ideas?

I also have a x reg polo gti i also have the same problem, new pads were fitted in the front and the light comes on driving back from work. Although when the car is switched off and then back on again the light goes away. How do i clean the abs sensors and also could there be a fault in the brake master cylinder? does anyone know?

thanks in advance for anyone that can help.

Check the fuses (on top of the battery?), the 1s on the later polos crack and cause this fault. ABS pumps are nomally very reliable.

Disconnect the sensors from the pump to see if the light still comes on (if you drive it the brakes will still work fine but the abs pump will not operate), alternatively you can get the abs error code checked. If its sensor related it will say.
If the light still comes on then its likely to be a pump issue.

Sounds similar to the problem I had. I had the rear pads changed & within a week the abs light was on. Tried everything from checking fuses, cleaning the abs sensors to having the abs black box repaired but the problem returned within a short time. I was looking at £600 plus just for a new pump from vw. In the end I got a complete abs pump & black box from a vw specialist breakers for £50 & paid my local garage £80 to fit it. Just make sure the model number matches exactly as there are slight variances in them.

i had the same issue with my 2000 plate. ABS sensor kept flashing up now and again, turned out to be one of the sensors on the back was faulty, only cost like £55 by my local garage to replace and fix.
