  1. Repeating EGR Valve Problem

Hello and would appreciate your help please.
Engine emission light has come on again after 15 mths since EGR valve sooted up / was renewed and I think the same problem has reoccurred. So want to learn how to fix this myself rather than run again to a garage at a cost of £350. Garage previously advised it was a big job and required specialist tools. From similar threads on this forum the tool needed appears to be a cut to size allen key, so whats special!
    So here's my questions:
    1) what do I need to diagnose the problem, i.e. do I need a VAG COM and software (I have access to an XP laptop). Where can they be bought?
    2) Where is the EGR valve on a Dec 2004 registered 2.5 TDI and what are the pipes for connected to the EGR? any pics would be most appreciated.
    3) Where can I get online in the UK the parts inc any gaskets.
    4) Once repaired similar forum threads advise disconnecting and blocking off the vacuum pipe say with a bolt without impacting future MOTs .... true or false economy?
Finally, any tips when doing the job
    Cheers,
    Steve.

you dont have to put in a new egr valve everytime i take mine out get the air can on it it blows all the black sut out and i usally clean the surrounding pipes
p.s if your not sure take it to a different garage any garage can do it so just look around at different garages

Cheers for the advice. I had a good look at the EGR fixings today, just how anyone can get a spanner or allen key on the bolts that point upwards especially on the right hand side defies belief so it looks like you have to dismantle other components. Perhaps your right and I should take the hit / cost and take it to another garage. The local SEAT dealer today said they would do the job with a 2 yr warrenty and advised me to return to a 504 / 507 00 SAE 5w-30 based engine oil and away from the Castrol GTX diesel recommended by the independent garage since the car came out of warrenty 2 years ago. Thanks Steve
