If I were to buy a RNS510 would it be a simple swap out for the RCD510 or does it require additional wiring to supply the Sat Nav signal ? Thinking of selling my RCD on ebay and buying the RNS if it's easy to do.

The only additional wiring is the GPS receiver that plugs into the RNS510. You don't have to route this anywhere. It can sit on a wee ledge above the stereo hidden away.

I presume the GPS reciever does not have to have an external connection then? I thought thats how they worked?

Yuo may also have to get the dealer or a friend with vagcom to pair the RNS to the multifunction display in the instrument cluster and any mutli function steering wheel.

I might be interested in your RCD510 if you go ahead

It has an external GPS receiver but with most GPS receivers they don't need to be external for it to function fine.

Most just tuck theirs on the wee ledge above the stereo.

My TomTom works perfectly well tucked in where the ash tray is without an external receiver.

The GPS aerial is a small black box that you can location on the little shelf within the stereo aperture in the dash - provide there is no metal above it it will work fine, and the shelf/ledge is a proven location. You need to ensure the unit you buy comes with the aerial and the mapping DVD. You also need to check the version A, B or C - i guess you will be B or C but you do need to check. There are firmware updates that can be done, but there may be a risk of freezing the unit if not completed correctly.

Also check who you buy your RNS510 from - one guy on golfgtiforum had a mare with his seller, needing 4 units to find one that was acceptable quality. Some ebay come from lithuania, although they seem to be more reliable in quality !

Thanks all. I clearly need to check carefully any e-bay seller before I go ahead.

Bozal there are a few guys on golfgtiforum MK6 section who bought on eBay from Latvian sellers and were delighted. I think they got them for £550. Have a search of that board.

And yeah you may have to get VAGcom activated but some are saying theirs was already activated.
