The Air Con pump is another common fault - I was quoted £850 by Main dealer again on an 05 with only 60k miles. Audi not too worrried about customer care on this one- should have been a recall or replacement FOC.

Good news, well better than the worst anyway. I got my pump off e bay and it was almost new,Audi will give you the exact part number but I know my new one came out of an 07 A4 with a different part number but the only adjustment is to connect the wiring to the top instead of bottom,or possibly bottom as opposed to top. It was a company called parts-direct-uk on ebay. and was only 100 quid from a write off with only 6k miles. They didnt list as delivering to NI but will for a fee , i think 25£.

joining this late as i stupidly bought a 2007 A4 convertible last year with 60K on the clock , used it for 500mils - red oil light came on, brakes seized etc same as everyone else
had a quote from an audi garage of £2500-£3500 to replace hex balancer shaft assembly and possible turbo if needed - had no money so got car into our garage at home and left it till this week - took it to garage, i sourced the hex kit for £215 garage
charging £1000 labour, got call 2 days later to say all fitted but turbos gone - another £750 required - HOWEVER NOT TO CONFIDENT THAT THIS WILL BE THE CAR FIXED AS ENGINE SOUNDS NOISY - no idea what to do now

anyone else got to this stage ?

Did the garage not check the main bearings and conrod bearings nearest the gearbox when it was all apart?? They should have, as these are the ones which fail first, and would have picked up on damage before putting it all back together. It would have only taken them an extra 30 mins and 4 new bolts from Audi (they are single use bolts).

If there is damage to the main bearings / conrod bearings then the crank will likely be damaged also which will mean it needs a regrind or a new (used) engine, as getting the crank reground is basically a full engine rebuild job, everything has to come out.
