Thanks for all your useful info.I have had a second opinion from a technician with 30 yrs VW/Audi experience. He immediately diagnosed the small belt pulley at the front of the engine which is lying off line and not straight/flush with the engine. I hope to have it rectified this week and fingers crossed it will cure the noise and will rule out the balance shaft problem, for now!

    I'll keep you posted......Here's hoping!
Yesterday I took a real closer look and believe it or not, I found exactly same thing (all by my self ).
It's first thing in front of the engine (belt tensioner) and it looks realy worn out.
Tomorrow is my "date" with Audi service. I'll wait for their opinion, then I will show them what I found.
I'll keep you posted. Thank you for replaying!

    No Problem

The pulley on mine, which is the first small one at the very front of the engine(excuse my total ignorance of engine bays!)is sitting about 10 to 15 degrees off line if yours is similar?

Keep me posted and hope you get off lightly.!

Sorry about the delay... Whell i have a bigger problem. Yesterday i wisited Audi service and they told me it is oil pump shaft making that strange noise.
They said it is not laud but it's there.
I do have a service at 60000km (3500 missing) and i'll do my best to save money and have it fixed before my engine dies.
Here is parts pricing for that revised iol pump "shaft-gears" without any work charged.
    Parts only...

Sorry about the bad news - labour charge might be same again! Unfortunately also have 05 BLB engine with just over 60k miles. Got a full diagnostic done on engine by Audi in spring and it was air con pump but still worries me that balance shaft problem will start.

    Not good at all

When you say the noise relating to the oil pump was not loud, could they explain the noise you had noticed and was it something else??

No, they could not explain the noise I have noticed.
I have read on another forum that chain drive to oil pump is making that noise.
It would be great to have some audio to compare with mine.
Here is picture of belt tensioner that i thought it could be faulty but it's not.

And here is picture (from BoraParts.com) of all parts to fix the oil pump shaft problem:

Parts are for VW Passat 2.0TDI but there is Audi logo on main part. So I asumed it's same thing.
I even found pdf file with manuals how to do it your self.
Is it alowed to post link to thread on another forum (pdf-manual)?

My B7 is one of the first with the 2.0TDi BLB engine (registered June '05) and it's got 167,000 miles. Should I be worried???

Not hearing any unusual noises from the engine, in fact it's considerably smoother and quieter than my 03' Passat 130TDi 4mo.

With 167k miles I think you would have heard and paid for problem before now - looks like you have a good BLB - have only 60k done on my Oct 05 and hope I can match you! Just keep her serviced!

Are you first owner of your's B7? If not, maybe conversion was done before.
I'm still researching noise from my engine.
I was not convinced by Audi service. I think they just want to make some "easy money".
