Audi A4 2002 soft top not working??

Just bought a 2002 A4 convertible at auction but the soft top does not work?? press the button, the windows come down then the message 'soft top cannot be used' comes up on the dash?? went to my local VW dealership and they said take it to Audi its probably a solanoid at fault?? anyone had the same problem?

hi tall rugby guy,I also own 2002 a4 cabby,
A short time after buying it I was allowed out in the sunshine by myself and thought I would pose for a while with the top down.
1 .PRESSED BUTTON
2.WINDOWS DROPPED
3.SOFT TOP CAN NOT BE OPENED/USED ETC
4. LOOKED STUPID
5.GAVE UP
6.WONDERED WHAT EXPENSIVE HEADACHE I HAD PURCHASED
7. CLEVER WIFE LAUGHED SMUGGLY, WENT OUT TO CAR AND OPENED THE ROOF IN SECONDS
8. YOUR TURN NOW .....HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU..

OPEN CAR BOOT ,CHECK THE STORAGE BOX TRAY IS OPEN(HANGING DOWN INTO YOUR BOOT SPACE),THE LEVER TO OPERATE THIS SHOULD BE SWUNG OVER TO THE RIGHT HAND
SIDE (OFF SIDE) THUS ALLOWING THE ROOF SOMEWHERE TO GO.
I HOPE THIS IS YOUR PROBLEM, AND NOTHING MORE SERIOUS

Thanks eveyone for you help, taking it to my nearest Audi dealer on tuesday for them to have a look at my roof and plug plug my car into thier computer to see whats wrong?

Hey,

Have a 2003 cab and would recommend you get Vagcom (or a version of it) as it is very useful to scan for roof errors. Will save you a fortune in the short (not to mention long) term.

The roof has a load of sensors (most easily fixed if you are good with electronics) and also communicates with the 4 window motors and the central convenience unit. You need vagcom to work out which one is gone/not working.

BTW, if you get the code post it here and I should be able to let you know how to resolve as I have fixed most possible errors (I hope

).

Called down for a chat with Audi in Swansea at 9AM, spoke to a really nice guy in the servive department caller Gareth, he said it would be £100 to look at it and they would be able to tell me what's wrong and they could look at it at 3 that day, didn't have time to wait there all day so I will book it in for one morning next week and let you know, I did tell the guy I press the button, the windows come down and then nothing!!! so it's obvious to me that the front is not releasing the hood. Hopefully it isn't much wrong with it at £80+ VAT per hour for labour

Hi, typed in VAGCOM into Ebay and loads came up

which one do I buy? obviously I need the lead and software disc but which version?, then do I just plug it in and press my hood open button? Or just run a test with the software, and most importantly will it dammage any software in my car if I use it incorrectly
