Bit of an odd one - I noticed a few months ago that my temperature gauge is showing a rather low temperature when the car is obviously running hotter. At normal engine temp the gauge is showing 70degrees. When I check the temp sensor reading via VAG-COM it is showing 90 degrees. Surely a temperature gauge does not just drop 20 degrees?

    Any ideas?

But the VAG-COM is showing a correct temperature reading so surely the sensor must be OK?

The sensor sends 2 signals, 1 to the ECU, which you are seeing with vagcom, the other goes to the gauge on the dash, which is reading low. half of the sensor has failed.

gary you can check temp sensor reading through engine measuring blocks and also dash pod measuring blocks to confirm if sensor or dash fault

towstervag, please can you explain in more detail what you mean? What are engine measuring blocks and dash pod measuring blocks and what do I need to to perform the test? Thanks in advance.

measuring blocks are the readings given to the ecus ie coolant temp sensor gives reading to engine ecu on one side of the sensor so coolant temp can be 0-100 degrees etc its for correct fueling and you can read this figure through vag com
the other side of the temp sensor give your temp guage its reading through your dash
as you probably know 01 is engine and you can read the signals/ data ie engine temp
17 is dash pod and you can do the same and read engine temp
so you can compair the readings to confirm your fault
