Possible ecu problem ???

Hi newbie here
I've just brought a 98 passat 1.8 20v turbo with a tiptronic box.
the problem i've got is that the car seems to be in limp home mode whilst trying to go through the gears. I've also got NO lights on the dash so have no idea what gear i'm in

could this all be related to the ecu in the front footwell ??
I've now got 3 days off to try and sort this

get diag test done it could be just a multi function switch
check for water in drivers footwell

Thanks for the reply.
Finally got round to looking at it today and after checking the multi plug and CCM in the footwell - both fine with no corrosion or wet carpets !! - going to local specialist for diagnostic tomorrow. Will also get them to do the gearbox fluid whilst there as it cannot hurt.
Hopefully all will be fixed for little money

Will keep updated as it's a shame to scrap it, especially bearing mind it has full service history and only done 100,000 miles
