Audi A6 1,9 tdi gearbox ECU

Hi,
I bought an A6 Audi about 2 months ago, and everything was perfect, till the day I went to wash it. After the car wash i went home and i saw that the passenger footwell was flooded.I figured that problem later on but it damaged the gearbox ECU. It is almost 40 days since then and i am still looking for a second hand ECU but with no results. The mechanic that looked at my car told me that I have to find the exact same part with the same part number. I found 2,3 but they have the last letter different than mine.I heard that it is possible to re-code the ECU,but that's all i know.Does anyone know how that happens?And if it is nesecerry that all the letters and numbers on the part number should be the same.I will really apreciate if anyone can help me.
