'98 Polo 1.0L Handbreak remains stuck because it has been wrenched beyond its normal point - resulting in the 'thumb release button' withdrawing into the handbreak shaft!
Does anyone out there have any suggestions as to how to release it?
    Many thanks

you may be able to get to the ratchet by lifting the rubber boot and possibly releasing it with a screw driver, otherwise you will need to get underneath and ease the adjustment off the brake cable, put a block behind the wheels to stop it running away, and don't work underneath with just the jack holding the car,
