I have a mk3 16v 2.0 volkswagen golf 1997 (p reg). What started as an intermittent fault is not continuous. When accelerating in any gear just before it hits 3000 revs the car pulls back and starts spluttering and will then not accelerate past approx 40-50mph. I have changed the following trying to fix this fault:- air flow sensor, ignition leads, distributor cap, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter. I have taken the car to 3 different garages and none of them can find the fault. The last garage changed the ignition switch and the coil pack but the latter made no difference so have kept the old one on. They also tested the car when cold then when hot and it did not make any difference to the fault. The car has been on a diagnostics computer twice, the first time was an air intake fault hence the reason i changed the air flow sensor but the second time did not bring up any fault at all. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated as i am desperate to make my beloved car work. Thankyou.

change the engine control relay (number30) or no3 relay in the fuse box if my memory is correct, these have a tendency to play up and give the faults you describe worth a try for a tenner from the dealers

I keep relays and MAF's as part of my toolkit. You can never have to many of them, especially seeing as you can put them in your pocket at the breakers yard......Whoops.........Did I say that out loud.....?
