I am surprised it is a 98 as the 98 system didn't fail in my experience. What is the cars chassis year letter, W or X?

Thought so, it is a 99 model, not a 98. You need part number 06B 133 619 A which was £206.29 but may have chnaged slightly. You may also need a kit 058 198 619 A which is about £5 but I have never needed it.

Thanks you for that. much appreciated. is it a direct swap or do i have to remove the manifold? I have failed to find any DIY on this. DO you think the arm broke due to a problem in the manifold which would need to be fixed first?

    They just break, no reason.

HI Crasher,Thanks for your guidance so far.

i tried to move it with my hands. No movement at all. I have seen other posts that is should be eash to move the unit. IT seems stuck somewhere in the manifold. IS there anything to look out for while pulling the unit out of the manifold? Wouldnt want to cause any damage or drop anything inthere.

By the way apart from the fact that its broken, i have never noticed any difference in the driveability of the car. YEs it is very under powered especially on take off but been like this since i bought the car second hand, unless it was broken by then already. I always thought the non turbo was very under powered. Does this fix in anyway improve on the performance / driveability?

    Thanks

Had a few 1.8T in my time and drove many NA 1.8 and 2.0 engines, i would say sell yours and buy a 1.8T or diesel engine. Even the 180Bhp in the limited edition quattro sport feels asthmatic, a PD TDI with a remap will give him a good run for the money ! Also diesels are much easier to tune, hybrid turbos and larger injectors are common swaps... I might get flagged by true petrol heads but my 300Bhp audi a6 2.5 tdi quattro feels as fast and torquer than the b6 s4 i have ! I am comparing pure v8 NA engine with a lousy v6 diesel engine with 90 technology !

If you remove the inlet manifold to change the flap assembly there is nothing to fear dropping broken parts as they can be tipped out easily. The worst part about removing the manifold is the boot clips, they are a git! I now have the special VAG pliers for these but I used to use a pair of adjustable pliers that I heavily ground into inside the jaws to make them do the job.
