Hi, I've got 1998 1.6 A3 and the wipers have started going really slow and now have just stopped. I'm looking to buy a used motor and linkage of ebay but wondered if anyone knows if a 2001 or 2006 A3 part will fit a 1998 model?

Doubtful that the 2006 will fit...thats the 2nd generation A3...different model. I would think that the 2001 would but can't say for sure.

Yep. 2004 the new shape (known as the 8P) arrived to replace the 8L....your shape.
Although just to add to the confusion the 8L had a facelift about 2001 I think but only a few changes to lights and interior I think.

    there are 2 different motors
check how many wires go to your motor
    early A3 had 5 wires
    newer A3 had 4 wires
and this is the same version
if you can get the part no off of the motor if concerned
