If you just want to scan, you can buy a generic OBD lead from ebay and use the shareware version of VAG COM.

To clear fault codes, the best thing to buy is the proper USB HEX-CAN lead, that way your lead is futureproof and can do all cars from 95-present day.

Last time I checked a company called Marshalls Industrial was the cheapest at around £235.

the ebay lead will clear fault codes, but it won't allow chnages unless you register the shareware software.

As for proper cables they are so much better and the shareware software is really old and limited now

So a registered version of Vag-com is needed to make changes, but the leads don't matter?

what is the differance between a ebay lead and a expensive lead?

the ebay lead (3rd party) has to be registered, to do adaptations and other functions. the registration is tied to one computer only.

The Ross-tech leads hold the license so you can use any oc with the software installed. you just need to plug the lead in.

    look here for more info
