    Hi a Newbie here,
i hope you can help with a problem on my Dad's A6 2.4 SE 1998 auto, basically when he bought it the electric cooling fan for the A/C was running very loud, i sourced a replacement from Eurocarparts and fitted it myself,
trouble is the damn thing still wails like a banshee when it cuts in and is so loud my dad runs with econ on just to keep the fan off,
which with the nice weather means the aircon is not working fully,
my question is...is this how it's designed or is there a fan speed/control problem?
when the aircon fan on my BMW 5 Series runs all you hear (if anything) is a low hum!
thanks in advance for any advice and a great forum btw

This may be a welded up high temp switch in the rad causing full speed fan ALL the time. Also check relay J101 has not welded itslef short. The fan is either not on, on at reduced speed if the rad id fairly hot and full speed very hot. Regards Peter

The rad fan is two speed and this is done by diverting the power feed for the first speed through a ballast resistor. The system is a little odd and seemingly over complex but from looking at the wiring diagram it must be the 2nd sped relay that is stuck on and I would suspect the A/C pressure switch or the 2nd stage of the rad fan switch. Unplugging the relay (number 2 under the dash with the number 213 or 370 printed on top I think but it could be 214 or 373) should shut the fan down but it should not be run like this. Equally it could be saying the A/C system pressure is too high, it is the 2nd speeds job to bring it down. If you would like the wiring diagram, PM me.

Thanks for the offer Crasher but i managed to get hold of a Bentley manual for it and their diagrams are quite extensive.
