    Hi

Can anybody please help. I have a VW Passat 2006, 2.0TDi 140bhp. A light has come on the dashboard which says "Oil pressure. Stop Engine" and a red symbol of a driping lamp has come on as well. Any help would be appreciated. The manual says check oil level, which is ok and if ok then take to dealers/garage.

Any body please help???? I live in Wakefield, West Yorkshire any suggestions, specialist garages etc.

    Thanks

sounds like a dealer computer fix.

i bought a little computer off ebay £100 it tell you what fault codes are in ecu.. etc. and you can clear them. i'd recommend one of these as you can take it to garage knowing what to expect, or even look into it yourself..

item was VAG405 Oil Service Airbag Reset Code Reader: Audi VW

not sure of all its capability's but i like the idea of it.. for £100 good tool.

    Mine did that.

If its a 2.0TDI of 2006 vintage it is quite possibly the oil pump which has failed due to faulty case-hardening on an idler gear.
A well-known and documented fault, you will be looking at a new engine,as running with no oil pressure will render it as scrap.
    Is it still under warranty?

Sorry mate, if its run for any length of time at all - and I mean ANY - it will probably have knackered the pistons. bores, and crank bearings.

How many miles has it done and has it had a VW service history?
I would be banging the door down of my local dealer as this IS a known fault, mine (2006 2.0TDI) went at 28k and the service manager didn`t even bother to walk out of the showroom to look at it, just said to receptionist "new engine - get him a car". The sister car (identical in every way and purchased on the same day) needed a new engine the day after its first service at 18K.

This affects all/any VW group units of this type so affects Audi/Skoda/Seat as well, it is down to a faulty bought-in component. I was lucky in that warranty covered it, but I think its bloody disgraceful that they aware of the problem but do nothing unless the unit fails.
As a result I won`t get another - this is my third Passat - as I have lost all faith in the company.

Seriously, though, is there any way of taking preventative measures regarding this particular problem - short of replacing the oil pump, which would presumably cost a fortune - or any warning that might indicate impending failure?

I assume VW wouldn't be interested unless the failure actually occurred?

I think I read previously that the fault tended to occur at around my current mileage, and I'm well out of warranty and thus concerned about it.

Stuart, the same thing happened to a neighbour in my street, and he has around 80k on his 2.0 TDi 140. I think he didn't have to get a new engine as he stopped immediately. It happened about 2 weeks ago and I saw him driving around a few days later, so I'm just assuming his car was ok. If I see him before I head off to the US, I'll let you know what his situation was.

My neighbours Passat did the same thing, he shut the engine off immediately but it still destroyed the bottom end and the turbo but thankfully he was under an extended VAG warranty. When they are failing they deliver progressively lower oil pressure so that by the time the drive rod spins and loses all pressure bringing on the light, it is way to late. It is a shamefully bad design, not just poor manufacture.

The only two preventative measures I can think of are to replace the oil pump/balancer assembly before it fails or to fit an oil pressure gauge so that you get an advanced warning, if you notice it. VAG products used to have a dual switch dynamic oil pressure warning system that went off if the oil pressure was below 1.8 bar (some were 1.4 bar) and I know countless engine this saved from serious damage. Now they depend on a 0.55 to 0.85 bar single switch system.

    Ey up....

Quick update. I took my car to VW, they quoted me £1400 to replce the fule pump, balance shaft assembly and labor. Obviously i not willing to pay that much, so i took it to my local non VW garage.

He opened the sump etc and no sludge, carbon residue, or any kind of mess. He then had a look at an allen-key like object which connects the fuel pump to one of the shafts and it was worn out from one side.

He says that allen-key like object needs replacing but whats everybodies view, should i also replce the shaft? Will that be worn out as well?
