You mean the oil pump and the whole assembly has to be replaced, balance shafts the lot-a very common problem. The balancer shaft module with oil pump and chain come to around £760 plus fitting.

Am I right in thinking that these oil pump issues generally happen at about the 90k mark?

I`m just coming up to 80k, and after 3 new injectors and possibly a new DMF (goes in tomorrow), I dont want to be faced with another huge bill that the almighty warranty company may or may not pay for.

Seriously starting to think about getting rid of this car, which will be a shame as I really like the spec of it.

My neighbour’s car (thankfully for him still under the VW dealer warranty) failed at 50K and took the turbo with it as well.

Quick update, I was just talking to my neighbour, and he told me that the failure of the oil pump took the turbo as well, just as Crasher said in the above post

Thanks, Spudrig - Kind of wish I'd gotten the 1.9 now. Or something other than a VW!

It is a shamefully bad design, not just poor manufacture.

The only two preventative measures I can think of are to replace the oil pump/balancer assembly before it fails or to fit an oil pressure gauge so that you get an advanced warning, if you notice it. VAG products used to have a dual switch dynamic oil pressure warning system that went off if the oil pressure was below 1.8 bar (some were 1.4 bar) and I know countless engine this saved from serious damage. Now they depend on a 0.55 to 0.85 bar single switch system.
Thanks, Crasher. Would you say that it's kind of inevitable on the 140 once it gets to high mileages (80-100k or more) or is it just a proportion of them that it happens on or a batch?

I think I read on here previously that it was just a batch that was affected, but I can't stop worrying about this now, and don't really know what to do about it.

I've still got £4k owing on the HP and when I bought the car I was hoping that it would sail past 100,000 miles and when the repayments were finished I would still have a car worth a few grand to sell or it would last for another few years after that.

That is difficult to say, I am not even convinced the replacement parts are going to be immune to the problem.

There is an ongoing campaign for the 2lt BKP engine,Service Campaign 13D8,although,not all vehicles are affected.Might be an idea to ask your dealer,if your vehicle is affected by this campaign.

Thanks - I've got a full VW history from the same dealer, and just had the timing belt and water pump replaced, so if the oil pump thingy goes belly up and wrecks the engine and they've known about the problem and said nothing then I'll be a bit annoyed, to say the least.

But since the car is well out of warranty I don't suppose they owe me an legal obligation.

I just wonder if a new oil pump would be a solution to this, just change it as a precaution?

I`d been thinking the same, but at over a grand as a precaution on a car that is fast depreciating....well you get my drift.
