More difficult to check without specialist equipment as essentially there are no visual differences between a full one and an empty one.

See if there is anyone locally that cleans them - it's cheaper than replacement, legal and has covered enough miles to warrant a clean anyway. The Carbon Mass and Soot load figures would need to be reset when a new or cleaned unit is put back on using VCDS. There is an adaptation option in the Adaptation menu of the Engine controller but this only does part of the reset. For a new unit reset the figures to zero (using 1 not 0 as it happens as using 0 defaults to something else oddly) but for a cleaned unit there may be a small amount of residual ash left so I would set the Carbon Mass to 1 or 2 grammes to start with.

The tensioner is a quirky little thing - involves rotating, locking, rotating again then tightening when the pointer is in the right place

Just make sure the tensioner stud is still tight and doesn't undo when you release the tensioner nut. If you replace the tensioner stud it is very important to install the new one correctly and to the exact torque. I stick Loctite on mine usually.

    Good luck.

Faulty oil bypass valve in oil filter housing causing return of oil straight to sump perhaps? If your oil pressure sensor is not faulty - have they checked this? - then it would possibly read low pressure in the housing if the bypass valve is stuck open (I believe the oil pressure sensor is connected to the side of the oil filter housing, like it is on the 2.0 litre).

They haven't checked oil bypass valve they want to replace the engine they think it will be cheaper then looking for the actual problem I wondered if the oil feed pipe would cause it I noticed it was twisted since turbo was changed but they say shouldn't be the cause as oil pressure engine off warning was on before turbo and oil pump was replaced
