Thanks, it nice to have the mp3 function and the quality of the unit is better than the original RCD 300. there also lost of other thing it can do like track listing when an ipod is connected (with VW i/f connected) and it can use the enhance parking system and tell you how close things are to the rear all in the future

Looks really good mate. Like how being OEM it looks great and really fits the MK5 well.

    Still want the RNS510 though!!!

Well a quick update on my RCD 310 install, Basically the CAN gateway is of the wrong revision in cars older than 2008. ?This causes the radio to drain the battery within 2 days!!!!

This can be resolved by updated the CAN Gateway to SW version 1K0 907 530 L.

So I'm on the look out for a new can gateway until then the RCD310 is in the cupboard This issue also effects the RCD 510, RNS 310 and later versions of the RNS 510.

If any VW techs can tell me if the SW can be updated without changing the unit please let me know

    Rob.

Hi, are you aware of dension? I've been told their ipod kits are good, although not sure if it works for the gen 3 headunits (310/510) Worth looking at although they are not the cheapest bits of kit.

Hmm, I'm looking at upgrading from a non-mp3 RCD300 in a 55 plate Golf to a touch screen RCD510. I've heard about this battery problem on a few sites.

Could you explain what this CAN gateway thing is please? I'm not that clued up on this stuff!

Cheers, and good luck with the search!

CAN or "Controller Area Network" is the way all the electronics talk to each other in a modern car.

There is an issue with the CAN controller and the Newer Generation Radio's and Sat Nav that causes the radio to talk to the controller and not fully switch into standby.

You then end up with a Flat battery as its pulling 1.5 amps rather than a standby of .05 amps.

You can get a newer Can Controller form VW which needs to be coded in. part costs around £100.

    HTH

Hey, I recently put my 55 plate Golf GT TDI in for a service and VW told me they were updating the software - could this be for the CAN software update?

I am really keen to purchase an RCD 510 but not if it's going to destroy my battery!

    Thanks!

Doubt it. This is probably an ECU update - From what the service dept told me, it's a VW recall thing which fixes spluttering idling, amongst other bits and pieces (that my car is suffering from).

I've got to take mine in to get checked out a week on Monday (15th) and I'm going to ask them about this CAN controller thing and whether it can be flashed or whether I need to purchase a whole new unit to enable me to get the RCD510.

    I'll keep you posted.
