Hi all, I have just traded my 2001 1.8t Golf for a 2.0 tdi Passat.

When the engine is at idle speed after a min or so the car will start to judder for about 20 seconds then stop. It will do this repeatedly until I drive away. I have tried pushing the clutch pedal and applying the handbrake however neither seem to have any effect. It also does it at all running temps. It does stop if I press the accelerator to slightly increase the revs.

The car drives normally and I am a little confused as to what could be causing this. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

Mine too. It doesn't do it everytime I pull up and put it into neutral, but quite a lot. It seems to me that it's because the engine isn't idling smoothly. I had this problem with a previous car (2.5l petrol) and the manufacturer finally fitted new engine mountings. Problem solved.

I'm going to mention this at the next service, whenever that'll be. I suspect the engine isn't running smoothly.

This is a much discussed topic on here.

I have a 2.0TDI Passat and i find mine does it when the oil level is getting low.

I top it up to the top of the (very very hard to read dip stick) and the slight judder does go away.

I may actually be completley off track and my engine may fall apart at any time, i am certainly no mechanic, but the above does seem to work on mine. it has now done 25K (me from new) miles and never missed a beat.

I have also had a conversation with a tech at our local dealer and he said its nothing to worry about its a trait of that engine.

Good luck with the new car hope you enjoy

If we're talking manual boxes here, there must be something wrong with mine then because it doesn't do it.

I sometimes get a slightly lumpy idle, but never a stall. Can't seem to pinpoint a common scenario when it does it. I wondered last week whether it was doing it because one of the front wheels was in a dip on the drive! (Can't see any logical connection there!)

I get a bit of random vibration at idle occassionaly, as if it's not idling properly, and look down expecting to see some movement on the rev counter, but it's as steady as a rock.

I guess the only way to check whether it idleing properly is to hook it up to vag com or something? I don't reallly want to pay VW to do this. The symptoms are exactly the same as described in other posts above.

    Thanks for your help everyone.

If the duel mass flywheel is on the way out it can put the whole engine out of balance so it seems to shudder on tickover. If this was the problem you would feel it through the clutch as you went to pull away in first gear.
