1996 2.5TDi ticking and sticking?

Hi Folks

My 1996 2.5tdi 140 developed a light ticking noise while under load (and occasionally tickover) some while ago. It's my wife's car, so I'm not as on-the-case as I ought to be, but it's got noticeably worse - I've driven it this morning and, after a short rip of two or three miles, I stopped for ten minutes - on attempting to restart, it fired up OK, but would then sit at a constant 1500rpm or thereabouts and would NOT respond in any way to throttle, just kick out clouds of smoke and tick. Hmmmmm..... tried to restart a few times, but symptoms remained. Being parked on a hill, I rolled off downwards in second and, after a couple of hundred metres, it cleared... once again responding to throttle and behaving normally. No problem with power, response, etc -- I drove 40 miles and it's fine.
Any ideas?

Have you checked the intake pipes for any splits or hose's that have come off?

Could be worth while getting your pump timing checked to, though you would need someone with vag-com or a specialist/dealer.
