Coolant Leak From Coolant\Water pump Housing

Hi all,

I returned to my car yesterday (1999T, 1.8T 20V) to find a rather large pool of coolant under it. I checked the level in the tank and it was about 1cm under min (at weekend it was full) as I was at work I topped it up and got home.

Once at home I got under the car and could quite visibly see a drip coming from the housing of the coolent pump. When I cleaned it all up so I could properly identify where it was leaking, I noticed a little hole that looked like a inspection hole of some sort?? close to the shaft where the pully and belt are, so it is on the opposite side from the thermostat. It was quite a regular drip maybe one every 2 seconds. So last night I took off the filler cap and left it be, as I couldn't do anymore.

This morning it hadn't leaked?! So I put the cap back on and drove to work, once again it was leaking so I have left the cap off again tonite.

I have searched the internet to no avail today, alot seem to leak at the seal to the block, but mine is definately leaking at the opposite end to that. I have had many suggestions including water pump, but nothing I can rely on.

Oh and one other thing, I put a new thermostat in about a month ago, but it has been good a gold, so I don't suspect that! Also the drip is no where near that.

I'm scratching my head big time! HELP

If you are sure it's the pump, then the seal on the shaft has gone. This lets water get into the drive shaft space that has a little hole in to let the water out. You need a new pump in that case.
