i have a 99 1.8T a3 and the other day it just lost power. Yesterday morning the car was fine and then later on that day it felt as if the turbo just wasnt kicking in.

The turbo seems fine and air still comes out the dump valve but not as much as suppose to. Took it to a vw audi garage and they tried it with the air mass meter off and it died so they said its not that its probably the 'n-stage'? i think or something to do with the air filter area.

He said the parts are abour 150 quid and is a mechanical fault that goes on these engines. Coukd this really cause such a loss of power and anyone got ideas why it might of happened?

He is suggesting that the N75 turbo control solenoid is faulty which can happen. I would be interested to know what fault codes were stored. There will be one, an open/short circuit AMM (MAF) as some muppet has disconnected it with the engine running. A little knowledge is a very dangerous thing! The N75 is £60 from Audi and takes about 10 minutes to fit, £150 is a bit excessive for just the N75 valve.

thanks for your reply... so where does this N75 valve go? when he was saying what he thinks it was he was tapping the back of the air filter box just to the right of the MAF sensor.

Could this cause a big loss in power? someone mentioned to get a new N95 valve for it.. are these 2 different things?

the car was origanally remapped and then ad a k03s turbo put on it.. not ad a problem since but could this be a reason its gone?

    thanks

If he was pointing to the unit on the screwed to the back of the air cleaner with a plug either side, that is the ignition amplifier N122. The N95 is the driver’s air bag igniter and it would be pushing it to blame that! The N122 ignition amplifier is a very troublesome component but I have found it is extremely important to change this and all four coil packs at the same time as one or the other being faulty damages the other. If you don’t change all five components at the same time, you end up changing four coil packs one month and the amplifier the next, and then the coil packs again the next month followed by the amplifier again a month later, round and round in circles until you loose your marbles…

It is always possible the remap is an issue and may be the turbo but without analysing readings from both I can’t say.

so its either the N122 or N75 valve? could these cause the car to lose most of its power? you know of any good places to get these valves and coil packs?

The coil packs and ignition amp can be bought non genuine from places like GSF, the coil packs are a little cheaper but not much, the amps are quite a bit cheaper. I don’t think you can get the N75 anywhere except the main dealer. A faulty ignition amp will cause poor running and misfiring, a faulty N75 valve will just cause a general feeling a flat power output.

The N75 is stuck on top of the air pipe leading from the air mass meter on the air box, it has tow 13-mm hoses and a wire going to it and one of the connections goes into the large diameter turbo inlet hose. Probably one of the easiest parts to change on the car and very prone to failure, a gamble but a considered one.

Did you have a fault code read done?

I would suggest fitting a new genuine VAG dealer supplied Air Mass Meter would be a worthwhile step. It may not cure it but they cost less than an hours labour at a VAG dealer. Please do not be tempted to buy one anywhere but a VAG dealer. Aftermarket units are faulty so often it is ridiculous.
