    I have a chance of getting a PIPER camshaft , 285 (BP285H) type. out of a 1.8, 8v gti

on the box, it says PIPER 285 (BP285H) ULTIMATE ROAD CAM

I have heard this camshaft will work in a 1.6 carb engine.

if so, would it be a straight swap?, what timming position would i need to use?

or would this camshaft make the engine unstable, lumpy running, unreliable, etc

    cheers

    Nobody replied,

anyway, scrub that camshaft question, wanted to much for it anyway.

but, i have the chance of getting a camshaft from a standard 8v gti,
is this cam any different to the 1 already in my 1.6 golf?
would there be any noticable benifits in fitting it?

any help would be great on this

    thanks

Sorry, I missed your post first time around. I am glad you didn’t buy that cam, it would have made your car idle like a bag of ****! I sell (and have fitted hundreds over the last 21 years) Piper cams and I would have nearly refused to sell you one unless you had really insisted and were totally clear in what to expect. I have just built a 1900 Digifant GTI engine with a stage 2 head with a Piper BP285H and the idle is pretty awful, its emissions hover around an MOT failure at idle. The BP270H however is absolutely ideal. Fitting a 1.8 GTI cam is a complete waste of time and money, your car does not have the compression, CC’s or management system to take advantage of it. If you want a quick power gain, fit a Weber direct replacement manual choke carb kit. If the insurance companies got wind of how much extra power these give they would not look on them as a direct replacement.

thanks for heads up on the cam.
how much would i expect to pay for the BP270H you mentioned?
what type of webber is best, as there are a fair few knocking about on ebay etc.

insurance not really a problem, as my premium is only £98 a year fully comp. but good to know that i shouldnt have to mention it to them.

also is it worth replacing the standard air filter, i am after macking it sound better ( even it is only a 1600 )

    cheers

We have them on special offer but I don’t know the price as I am not back at work until tomorrow.

The Weber you want is the conversion kit specific to your car, available from Webcon, their part number 2267091600. Put that number into Google and there are lots of hits.

Under no circumstances should you take off the original air box, in summer it makes them pull in hot air which loses power and in the winter the carb freezes which leaves you dead at the side of the road for ten minuets every ten minuets. Add a K&N panel filter (what we call “the brick”) and that’s it.

    thanks again for the advise.
the carbs are a bit pricey, do you happen to know where i might be able to get a slightly cheaper one? even if it means doing a stripdown and rebuild ( have done a few of those ).

is there any other fairly cheap performance mods that you could recommend?
have already uprated all bushes and fitted an uprated stiffer suspension ( 40 mm drop), bbs alloys.

but now want to focus on the performance.
the engine is only at 48,000 original miles, and in good nick.

You could try second hand off fleaBay but these are often a disaster that need rebuilding, have half the kit parts missing and with no instructions. They are the cheapest decent modification I have found in 25 years of modifying them.

Webcon are THE UK importers for the kits, did you phone them or email? You could try GSF.
