I have a 2004 Touran Diesel (secondhand) and struggle to fill the fuel tank at a garage as the pump continually cuts out. Even if the tank is empty, the pump will cut out with only 1 litre delivered. It takes me ages to fill the tank, gently squeezing the trigger/ changing the position of the nozzle etc. Often the pump times out before the tank is full!

The local VW garage and an independent VW specialist have looked at the problem and cannot see anything to cause this problem - the independent garage thought it might be a blockage in the breather pipe - but it wasn't.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem?

The VW garage says the next step would be to drop the tank down, but that will start to cost alot of £s!

can't possibly be, but sounds that you have a petrol tank fitted rather than a diesel tank!!!

I've only had this problem really badly in France, with diesel that had no anti-foaming agent added - it took about 20 minutes to fill up!

In this country it's not usually too bad, but I normally have to pull the nozzle out so only the tip is in (like the old joke 'call me justin') otherwise the pump cuts out. I think it's mainly due to the design of the tank connecting hose but some garages are worse than others and HGV pumps are worst, try a different technique or garage.

I have the same with mine. I've cured it by putting the nozzle in, then pull it out a notch or two on the nozzle and make sure I'm not pulling the handle up. That way the diesel goes in a bit straighter and stops the nozzle clicking off.

i have a sharan, when i scrapped a transit van the tank was half full off diesel which i syphoned into a barrel, then attempted to put into my car,put barrel on top of car, stuck pipe in barrel, started to syphon, put pipe in filler neck 2 mins later fuel blew out of filler on car, did this twice, seems that there is a breather pipe from top of tank to the filler pipe, this is shut off until you put the pump nozzle into the filler pipe which then opens the valve,if you put nozzle in to far it misses the valve! you can see the valve by looking in the filler neck then looking up towards the top of neck

Thanks to all for the replies. Unfortunately I have tried various garages and I have the problem with all of them, admittedly some are worse than others. I will try playing around with the position of the nozzle too. The only good news is the summer is coming and if it is sunny I don't mind standing in the sun!

Hi, I have the same problem with filling (same model as yours) and it drives me nuts, doesnt seem to matter what position I try it still takes forever to fill, . I havent talked to the dealer ship about it. Seems to be a generic problem. Was going to strip and have a look myself but havent got round to it yet, all boxed in. I've been looking for diagrams on the net but havent found anything.

I am glad to find someone with the same problem (though sorry you have got it too) I was starting to think it was just my car. I totally agree it drives me mad. I haven't done anything about it - not sure what to do really. I am going to try a different garage (my local independent land rover one who services my husband's car and will do VW as well) and I will mention it to them. if you do get anywhere please do let me know.
may be it is just a "Sport" model problem??
    thanks again ....

I had a 53 plate 2.0 Sport Touran for over 3 years and I had the same struggle to fill up every time. There is certainly a knack to inserting the nozzle without it "clicking" off every few seconds.
