The airbag light on my 2001 Passat has come on. Caused by water in the footwell underneath the passenger seat. Apart from stopping the leak in the first place, once that is done how can i sort out the sensir? Will it come back to life if dried out? Is it a replacement job and will that automatically extinguis the warning light?

I doubt water in the footwell put the airbag light on. Did you disturb the wires under the passenger seat. You need a vag-com read to identify where the airbag fault is.

Just an update for this thread, priced up crash sensor today £135 + VAT, at present my car is without passenger seat and glove box with carpet peeled back trying to dry things out, still haven't traced leak but it looks like pollen filter area, any advice?

What are the thoughts on using part finder and fitting a used item, would there be any guarantees from supplier?

I've fitted a used crash sensor, I thought it worth a punt at £20 and leak has now been sorted.

The sensor I've been supplied with has come with a different part number so hoping it will be ok. At present seat is still out while carpet dries, once the seat wiring is re connected should the dash board warning light go out or will it have to be reset?

Also thinking of buying a code reader, I've seen them for about £15 will this just be to read codes or is it considered that it will clear/reset also? Anyone??
