    Hi, I've got a 1.9 TDi A4, ('99).

The water pump was allegedly changed 2000 miles ago - the garage charged me for one but I never saw the old one despite asking for it - we’ve had a falling out over their ability!! The problem I’m having is after about 10 miles the heater stops blowing hot air unless the temp is turned up to 27+. The temp gauge sits at 90 degrees and it might be me but the car may take a bit longer to reach ‘normal’ temperature (even longer if the air con is switched on). After reading some posts on the forum I have an idea it is either the water pump or the thermostat that’s causing the problem.

I’ve checked the expansion tank. The small bore pipe at the top has no flow but gets hot and the pipe from the bottom stays cold. Presumably, if the water pump has failed, I'd see other signs i.e. the car would over heat?

    Anybody had a similar situation?

The air being switched on affecting the symptoms is a clue; this brings in the additional electric fan and cools the radiator as well so you may have a sticking thermostat. The garage may have fitted an exchange pump in which case they would have to add £15 to your bill to be able to give it you back.
