I have to replace both rear struts... they have both blown out. have the parts, but have NO idea how i am supposed to get the original strut out. I assume some of you have done this, any help?

Basically, i understand i will ahve to dismantle the rear 'dash' or somehow access through the trunk i am really tired of floating down the road, and it is actually starting to get dangerous as it jumps lanes every time that i hit a larger bump.

am i going to need any special tools? i am a fairly competent domestic (USA) vehicle mechanic, but always have problems with these german jigsaw puzzles.

too bad my first post has to be such a downer.

SHORT VERSION: need to remove rear struts... please help

Hi! Did you manage to access the rear struts?
My 96 Passat 1.9 TD saloon has clunking rear struts - I can find the top ends at either end of the rear seat backrest but I'd love to know how to diagnose the exact problem in case I don't need to replace the complete units.

    Thanks OD
