If you breakdown in a quattro and it is towed away do you get "wind up" in the gearbox?? or does it need completley lifting off the deck??

Check the handbook, I would think a quattro needs lifting.

You can tow it with all 4 wheels on the road but not higher than 30mph or for longer than 50 miles. If needed to tow for longer then get a flatbed as it will overheat the oil in the central diff and may dammage it. Lifting the rear/front wheels is not recomended as far as i know unless you unbolt the propshaft off the Torsen diff !

4 wheel pickup only on A4 quattro. I think the haldex system can be towed with the front wheels up, but the system isn't permenat 4 wheel drive. But i wouls insist on 4 wheel with that too

This is a good thread to bear in mind, seen as my next Audi might be a Quattro (although I'm not changing for a couple of years yet)...
