hi I'm a new member as you can see, i need some help with my vw golf year 05. its a 2 liter TDi. a couple of weeks ago i noticed my passenger side floor becoming wet and also my coolant water level getting low every day. so i booked it in at my local vw dealer for diagnostics.

after having the car for 3 days they called me back and advised me that the heater matrix needs replacing and that too do this job it will cost me 1200 GBP . (that includes changing the carpets in the whole car telling me it was contaminated.)

This sounds like too much money to me I'm not intereseted in changing the carpets i just want the car fixed.

can any one help me with how much the part should cost and the average labour cost at a local mechanics .

    thanks

i've miss typed my thread title and can't edit it could a mod kindly edit it to be called vw heater matrix leaking . thanks

It was this problem that made me decide to get rid of my 1999 Bora TDI in 2007. By that time it had over 160,000 on the clock and was 8 years old. Even then I was told I had been incredibly unlucky to have a heater matrix go.

I was quoted just over £1,100 at a VW main dealer. They advised that the part itself was an insignificant part of the cost being no more that £120. It was the vast amount of labour involved, probably a day and a half. The job was also complicated by the air con. Everything has to come out, dashboard and all the associated electrics.

A local garage quoted me £800 to do the job. The car wasn't worth more than £2,000 odd so the repair seemed uneconomic.

Others will know more about this than me but wouldn't it be worth seeing if VW would at least make a goodwill payment of some sort? These simply shouldn't be failing on such a young car. I was told I was unlucky to have one go on a high mileage 8 year old car.
