    Hi,

I am new to this forum, I am currently working on a small VW polo project (polo, 6n "99" 1.4 8v).

I just need some help in setting the TDC in regards of changing the engine head. The car has no wings nor front bumper leaving the engine exposed for work. I have a haynes manual and it does not say alot in regards to setting the TDC, so any help tips or advice would be appreciated.

I have been told to do the following:
    1) long screw driver in cyclinder 4, leave this cyclinder uncompressed
    2) only turn in the correct direction (how do I know which direction this is)
    3) you can visually see where it is by the screw driver and feel due to compression
    4) look for markings (where do I find these)
    5) Turn at the crank (any tools needed, and any ideal locations for turning)

In ways these avice tips leave a few questions un-answered so any help, advice and/or tips would be helpful.

    Many thanks in advance
    Alex

turn the crank via the centre bolt using a socket in a clockwise rotation. there is a mark on the pulley that lines up with a mark 0 on the timing cover. this is towards the top. then check the cam pulley. there is a mark that lines up with an arrow on the backplate at approx 5 0 clock. this is then set at tdc, allowing you to safely remove the cambelt, and do any other work required. ensure that when the engine goes back together that the cam mark is in roughly the right place. fit a new cambelt as well.
